Novella Carpenter, an urban farming pioneer, shot for Bloomberg Businessweek in her garden in Oakland 2ish weeks ago.
In addition to growing a plenitude of vegetables for her Ghost Town Farm, Novella currently raises goats, rabbits, ducks, and chickens on the premises, a squatted plot of land right next to her apartment at 28th and MLK in Oakland. She is currently in a legal dispute with the City of Oakland for selling an “excess of produce” from the uninhabited piece of land.

Scientists have managed to develop the lightest material on earth. Made from 90% nickel and consisting of 99.9% air, the material named “ultralight metallic microlattice” can easily balance on top of a dandelion without crushing the seeds. Tobias Shandler, one of the scientists, said the trick is to “fabricate a lattice of interconnected hollow tubes with a wall thickness 1,000 times thinner than a human hair.” (via)
